Thanksgiving traditions run deep, and delicious

Traditions are kept for many reasons, even if we’re not sure where they began. People are creatures of habit, which may explain some established practices. Other than turkeys and oinkers, the typical customs of Thanksgiving are free of complaints simply because they are so ingrained.

Ellis Co. shows 336 active cases

Ellis County continues its weekly updates of those impacted by coronavirus, which differs from the same report sent out from the state capital. This week’s says that 6,590 positive cases have been observed with only 336 currently active. That translates into 6,153 who have recovered.

The negative of the effects of COVID-19 are 101 deaths since the start of the year. The figures are available online.

Of the 6,590 who have tested positive, 3,355 have been female, 3,011 male and 224 did not indicate a gender.

End of an era: Mary Helen Gentry dies, age 91

Mary Helen Gentry, social editor and columnist for the Ennis News when the publication was a daily paper, passed away at the age of 91 last Tuesday at Bluebonnet Rehab, 2300 S. Oak Grove Rd.

Roger Maise murder case

The investigation into the Aug. 20 shooting death of a local 19-year old man at Roger Maise Park, 900 E. Martin Luther King Drive, is continuing, says Hopson. Progress has been made but not enough to warrant any arrests. “We are still following leads in the case,” he said. Considered an attempted robbery, it took place at 4:30 p.m. at the park located across from Fire Station No. 2.

Ennis JV, Frosh play Wednesday

According to Don Drake, Ennis A.D., the Ennis Junior Varsity will host North Forney this Wed., Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. There will be a freshman game at North Forney the same night, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m.

Ranked No. 1 in the state among Class 5A teams, Ennis will play its most important game of the season so far next Thursday, Nov. 19, when they take on unbeaten North Forney at City Bank Stadium (8,894 cap.).

Provided both teams won their games on Nov. 13, the Lions will carry a 6-0 mark into the game against the Falcons, 7-0. An early kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The game will be aired on YouTube free of charge at https://youtu.be/ XrzDBXcUSkA. Play-by-play and color commentary will be provided on the broadcast.

SAGU offers reasons for growth in pandemic

Southwestern Assemblies of God University, the only four-year college in Ellis County, has experienced good fortune during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

Asked by The Ennis News this week about the impact COVID-19 has made in enrollment, President Kermit Bridges gave a surprisingly positive reply. SAGU, whose campus had just 400 students in the early 1990’s, has swelled to over 2,000, including the current roll call.

Rash of car burglaries along I-45

A dozen car burglaries outside of the Comfort Suites, 400 S. I-45, in Ennis, took place Tuesday night, Nov. 10, according to EPD Captain Mike Hopson. No arrests have been made so far.

Hopson said it appears that two suspects entered 12 cars by breaking side windows in order to take valuables. EPD staff are evaluating video footage from the hotel as well as other nearby cameras to identify the culprits, the vehicle they used and the direction they were headed. He said it is believed they may be traveling along the I-45 corridor committing similar offenses.
