Aircraft carrier named for Dorie Miller

The World War II Pearl Harbor hero Doris “Dorie” Miller (1919- 1943), the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross for valor, was honored earlier this year by the U.S. Navy with an aircraft carrier named for him.

Locals know the name of Miller well as Ennis has had a school named for him since the 1950s. During segregation, the black community’s school was first named in his honor and when a new Ennis ISD intermediate school was built over a decade ago, the school board approved the hero’s name for that facility located on Lampasas St.

First Look Boutique shutting its doors

After nearly twelve years in operation, FirstLook Boutique of Ennis will be closing its doors on December 31. The boutique has served to provide financial support for the mission of FirstLook Center, which first opened in 2009. Then it offered a variety of gently used items including clothing, accessories, decor, kitchenware and household goods.

Much like the holidays that preceded it in 2020, Thanksgiving figures to be different this year. An ongoing pandemic has changed the way much of the world lives their lives, including how holidays are celebrated.

Veterans Day Program on tap for Nov. 11

Area residents are invited to the annual Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Memorial Park located behind Don Jose's Restaurant.  According to Budy Markham, masks and social distancing guidelines should be adhered. Those attending should plan to bring their own chair.  The cermony should end before noon. Ennis City Manager and veteran Marty Nelson will bring a short message. Veterans will be recognized. The laying of a wreath is scheduled as is a gun salute.

Ennis Regional Medical Center continued its excellent merits for area residents when the staff celebrated an esteemed designation as a LifePoint Health national quality leader. A special ceremony honored ERMC on Friday afternoon.

The honor is bestowed on hospitals within the LifePoint Health system that have enrolled and succeeded in transforming their culture of safety. ERMC has achieved high standards in quality care, performance improvement and patient engagement.

Story Walk opens at Lions Park
