Spring primaries are just around the corner, with instructions for voting in the joint polls released by Ellis County Election Administrator Jana Onyon. Both Randy Bellomy and Kelly H. Blackburn, the party chairmen in the county for the Republican and Democratic parties, having approved. The last day to register to vote is Monday, January 31.

San Jacinto Auditorium

Built in the 1960s on the site of the former Old Alamo Elementary School, San Jacinto Auditorium is now a community-utilized facility serving as a venue for a variety of events, from meetings to concerts. At least two instances of ghosts are connected with the building. One involves strange sounds in the offices and classrooms at the rear of the building. Described as chairs being slid across the floor, the activity has been attributed to a former Ennis High theater director named Fred Rankin who died in a car accident in the 1970s.

Ghosts of Ennis and Ellis County

Ennis is different than many towns in that there are few stories of reputed ghosts connected to the city’s old residences and public buildings. The Raphael House is alleged to be haunted by the ghosts of two former occupants, and is likely the best known case of apparitions in a historic home in the Bluebonnet City.

But for those who believe in the phenomenon — or those who just enjoy the entertainment — there are some other instances of supernatural occurrences associated with Ennis people and places.

Eastern Ellis County schools returning to class

Area school districts are resuming classes following the Christmas break. Parents are urged to check their respective school website or call the main offices as first-day back varies at Ennis, Ferris, Palmer, Italy and Avalon. Drivers should be alerted to the presence of students and buses at the start of each day.

EISD campuses begin earlier than some others. According to Superintendent Jay Tullos, faculty and staff commence regular hours on Monday, Jan. 3, while students report on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Ellis Co. hopefuls declared

Secretary of State John B. Scott’s office has posted the names and parties of those who filed for the March 1 primaries, including a complete slate from the GOP in Ellis County.

The historically Republican County is weighted to the Right in candidates, though Kelly Blackburn, the Democratic County chair, says there are three party hopefuls campaigning for a position. Many of the upcoming races will have the current office-holder running unopposed, though there is competition in others.
