Ennis netters host Crandall, Tuesday

Rough waters at a tournament in Forney last week sunk Ennis during an 0-6 voyage.

Facing three good Class 6A teams resulted in the Lady Lions getting swept by McKinney, Cedar Hill (12-6) and Arlington Bowie. Team Maroon bounced back to take one-of-three games against Royse City (17-9) as well as against Kaufman. The hosts, Forney (16-8) then brushed Ennis aside to drop the locals’ season mark to 9-11.

Ennis (6-3), Italy (3-0) keep up good starts

Ennis bounced back from a lackluster home debut against Lancaster by winning their first two matches at a tournament in Lancaster on Thursday. Improving their record to 6-3 through Aug. 19, the Lady Lions will continue to play on the road for the next two weeks.

Ennis ISD serving up free meals

In response to the federal government extending the yearlong, free food program, which the Ennis Independent School District has previously offered in the summer months, the district will provide free breakfast and lunch for students this upcoming school year.

Called the Seamless Summer Meals Option program, it has benefitted families with provision for two meals a day while parents or guardians are at work. The coming year extension is on the account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Del Barrio awarded by TSPRA

Former Communications Director of the Ennis Independent School District, Art Del Barrio, was recognized by the Texas School Public Relations Association for Professional Achievement. He was nominated for the award by his staff of six PR professionals and two interns.

TSPRA Communications requires honorees to hold professional membership in TSPRA for at least ten years and during that time exhibit a creative, dedicated, and professional approach to school communications.

Three Ennis choirs, Hixson, soar at All-State

Ob-la-di, ob-la-da was a phrase in a 1968 Beatles song that simply means, Life goes on. It originated with a Nigerian conga player who was a friend of Paul McCartney. If it means more of the same, then the Ennis choral department just upped the ante.

While their vocalists regularly win local, regional and state recognition, they have just risen to heights never before attained. According to Choir Director Jason Gadbury, three choirs made history at the annual University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-Reading competition.

Track & Field season has begun

Ennis Track and Field opened their 2021 season on Friday evening when they hosted Corsicana in a dual meet at Lion Memorial Stadium. It included field events as well as running relays, hurdles, sprints and others with action beginning at 4:15 p.m. and track races after 6 p.m.

Fans should mark their calendars for the annual Bluebonnet Relays this coming Friday, March 5, at Lion Memorial Stadium. The schedule of events will follow yesterday’s season kickoff. Ennis veteran coaches Stephen Marrow and Lonnie Redning and their staff will be on hand with a cast of amateur athletes.

Tullos pact extended

Ennis ISD Superintendent Jay Tullos had his contract officially extended at the Feb. 9 school board meeting. His term as head of schools began on June 3, 2019 after succeeding former Supt. Dr. John Chapman, III, who, himself followed Dr. Bobby C. Burns at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD.

Simply put, an additional year was added to his previous five year contract.

Beasley leads board candidates

During Tuesday night’s Ennis Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting it was announced that all three board members whose terms expire this spring will all have their named reentered for the May 1 election. The deadline to enter was Friday, Feb. 12.

Central Office Secretary Jami Bonner has received the three applications from Walter Beasley, Bill Chapman and John Erisman.

Ennis’ Taylor Daniell earns Dean’s List

University of Central Arkansas has announced the Dean’s List and Presidential Scholars for the fall 2020 semester. Former Ennis baseball All-District standout, Taylor Daniell, was named to the Dean’s List.

The 5’11, 205-lb junior is in his first year in Conway, Arkansas following two highly productive years at Hill College. Last year he hit .327, swatted seven HR’s and drove in 36 RBI. Daniell is an infielder for the UCA Bears.

Eligibility on the Dean’s List requires at least a 3.5 GPA with a minimum course load of 12 credit hours.

A conscientious effort to provide area football news of interest continues throughout the off-season.  Wednesday, Feb. 3, was National Signing Day, primarily regarded for football athletes signing their National Letter of Intent for the school of their choice. It also serves other sports commitments, though football draws the lion share of attention.

Ennis held a ceremony on campus at 4 p.m. at the Ensign Commons.

There are at least three tennis players who will publicly declare their college destination at 6 p.m. at the Ennis Tennis Center on W. Ennis Ave.
