Rev. R. P. Campbell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ennis, was asked to lead the revival at the 8th Street Baptist Church in Grand Prairie in February 1954. His program was advertised as providing “soul-stirring, God-honoring messages for the young and old.”

Don Drake tops off coaching staff

Athletic Director Don Drake confirmed several changes to the Ennis Athletic Department, most of them confirmed between the spring and the summer months. He recently pointed out that all vacancies with the EISD are filled.

Joe Volentine is returning to Ennis Junior High as the JrHi Coordinator. The skilled veteran is known for his leadership, humor and a raspy voice that hard to dismiss. “Joe was our junior high coordinator my first year (2019) in Ennis,” said Drake. “He is returning to us from Midlothian.”

Dating back to January of 1973, when the Roe vs. Wade decision paved the way to decriminalize abortion in the United States, over 60 million infants have died at the hands of doctors. That Supreme Court ruling began what many believe has become a greased slide of losing respect for life. It’s hard to argue against the impact of legally terminating a living soul.

State Rep runoff set for Aug. 31

Governor Gregg Abbott announced in a proclamation this week that August 31 is when the election for Texas House District 10 will take place.

Jake Ellzey, of Midlothian, won the seat in November of 2020. He left the position to run for the 6th Congressional District, which he won over Susan Wright.

Tuesday, Aug. 31, will be a special election to replace Ellzey. The State Rep seat in Austin is described as “reliably red” by the Texas Tribune. They also infer the HD-10 is comprised of largely rural areas south and southeast of Dallas.

2021 reboot for Historical Society

Sugar Glaspy, a founding member of The Ennis Historical Society (formerly the Ennis Heritage Society), has recently announced the 2021 reboot of the organization following the cancellation of last year’s events due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She requested voting and approval of a roster of new officers for the group by Aug. 11.

“This year marks the 40th anniversary of our founding and 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the railroad reaching this region. Please join us as we celebrate these occasions,” Glaspy said.

Ennis resident Carlton Myers has made a name for himself during his eight years in the Bluebonnet City, most all of it for his good-hearted actions.

A native of Los Angeles, California and a graduate of famous Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet High School, Myers is known for his involvement with his Blue Haven Kennel Club and his training of dogs, especially multi-show winner Max, not to mention hosting events for dogowners. Then there are his social skills and amicable nature. They all compliment Carlton as an executive chef.

Annie Marie Toney, 79, passed away on Aug. 9, 2021.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Eternal Rest Funeral Home Ennis, 215 N. Dallas St., Ennis, Texas 75119.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2021, at 1 p.m., at Fundamental Baptist Church, 209 W. Jefferson St., Palmer, Texas 75152.

Interment will follow in Ennis Memorial Cemetery, Ennis, Texas.
