Softball Lions score late, edge Ferris, 4-3

Emma Rios delivered in the clutch with a basesloaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to spark Ennis to a 4-3 softball win over Ferris. Earlier she tied the game in the fifth inning with an RBI.

Ennis hosted a pair of girls basketball playoff games on Monday. No. 9 Grandview (29-5) rallied for 10 unanswered points to pull away from upset-minded Kemp (16-18), 44-27. The Lady Zebras held a 27-25 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Nunez to play football at SE Okla. State

National Signing Day occurs early February across the country. One of the area’s most talented athletes, Matthew Nunez signed a scholarship offer to play football at NCAA Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The school of 4,824 undergraduates is located in Durant, Okla., 113 miles north on Hwy 75.

Ferris football opens with Maypearl

Fresh from the UIL’s declaration of district alignments for the next two years, Ferris football HC and Athletic Director Brandon Layne has six of the Yellowjackets next 10 regular season games scheduled. The Dallas Morning News has published the non-league games for many schools, with the Black-and- Orange among their list. It should be noted the University Interscholastic League does not allow team’s itineraries to become official until next Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Dallas man arrested in burglary of Red Oak store

Dequindrick Nelson, 29, of Dallas is in custody at the Ellis County Justice Center after Red Oak police arrested him for the alleged burglary of the Exxon Whistle Stop store at 598 N. State HWY 342. On February 11, 2020 at about 3:13am, Red Oak police received a burglar alarm from the store. When police arrived on the scene, the doors on the west side of the building appeared to have been pried open. Officers entered the building and, after a search of the interior, did not find anyone in the store.

Brookdale Senior Living Center holds first chili cookoff

Brookdale Senior Living Center on 2500 Yorkstown Dr. in Ennis, held their First Annual Chili Cookoff on January 31 in celebration of the upcoming Super Bowl. Nine competitors from healthcare organizations and Ennis High School students squared off for prizes in the overall chili competition, the meatiest chili designation and the hottest chili category. There were about 75 attendees to the chili cookoff, and everyone was a judge. After each judge tasted the entrants’ chili, votes were cast and tabulated to determine the winners.
