Ennis readies for 5-weekends of fun

After a scorching summer, this weekend ushers in the ‘Ber months, and fall’s arrival is jump-started with the pending return of the ever-popular Hay Maze and Pumpkin Patch. Watch for their signs - cooler temperatures and truckloads of bales of hay.

Lake Bardwell opened to public in 1964

One of the biggest events in Ennis and Ellis County history was the opening and dedication of Lake Bardwell in April 1964. Thanks to Henrietta Novotny, who shared with me her original copy of the Ennis Daily News for April 23, 1964, I learned of the large scale ceremonies planned for the occasion. The whole front page was devoted to the festivities that were scheduled. Some of the other events mentioned in this 1964 issue have been shared in past installments of this column. And a number of articles have yet to be transcribed and will be shared in future columns.

Ellzey hosts service academy forum, Sept. 7- 8

Ellis County Congressman, Jake Ellzey, is hosting two Service Academy Forums this week in the area. The first is on Wed., 6-8pm, Sept. 7, in the Lecture Hall at Waxahachie High School (3001 US-287, Waxahachie). Registration begins at 5:30pm.

Lately, I’ve had several emails from readers, asking some really great questions and providing even greater info about the history of Ennis, and I will be sharing the subjects of those messages in upcoming editions of this column. A short note was received from Henrietta Novotny, enclosing some clippings from the Ennis News in decades past. I thank her most sincerely. Carl Evans sent me a picture of the Ennis Post Office in the 1940s. He found it is his grandmother’s scrapbook. Also, Erin Thomas of Corsicana sent an email saying she read a copy if the Ennis News in a local waiting room and wanted to tell readers they were lucky to have a page about history included in their local paper. Forgive me, if I agree with Erin!
