Ennis Regional Medical Center is maintaining both their ability to support the community during the recent uptick in the pandemic as well as continuing the capacity to do more.

According to Chief Executive Officer Robert Rupp told The Ennis News that citizens should not delay their care if they are having a medical issue. The 60-bed acute care facility, located at 2201 W. Lampasas at U.S. 287, has room for COVID-19 patients at a time when many other hospitals have limited resources.

Tullos talks EISD police, campus safety

Many public-school districts across the nation have budgeted to employ a campus police department of their own rather than having security officers or area police, county sheriffs or state troopers. Ennis is one of them.

They follow the example of the Dallas Independent School District Police Department. They have over 200 police officers, security officers and administrative staff for 228 schools that protect more than 158,000 students and 21,000 staff members. The training these campus police have is the same as required by city, county and the state.

Kerry Porter, lover of Ennis history, passes away

The death at 70 of Ennis’ Kerry Porter, a retired teacher and musician who also operated the popular Facebook page “You know you’re from Ennis….”, has shocked and saddened many.

Personally, I owe a debt of gratitude to Kerry for allowing various articles and images he shared on his Facebook history page to run here in my column as well.

I never met Kerry. I was only in contact with him through Facebook Messenger and email. But he was always kind, helpful and supportive. He loved local history and all the people of Ennis.

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the U.S., behind only skin cancers. In fact, the ACS puts the average risk as a one in eight chance that a woman will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. And according to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is now the most common cancer globally, claiming 12 percent of new cancer cases. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women, superseded only by lung cancer.

During the mild cool-down known as the fall, Ennis is once again hosting the crowd-pleasing Autumn Daze. Parts of it begin and last the length of the month, building up to the return of the carnival and the October 30-31 weekend capstone downtown.

Billed as the largest, family-friendly fall event in Texas, the Ennis Autumn Daze is slated for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 30-31.

Harrison tops Wray in runoff

In what The Texas Tribune referred to as a contentious runoff between Conservative Republicans, Brian Harrison upset John Wray for the unexpired term for the District-10 seat in the House.

Harrison, 38, former chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Donald Trump, prevented Wray, 51, from reclaiming the position he held for three terms, beginning in 2015. He won by a 55.3 to 44.6 percentage of a small 9.5 percent of registered voters.

Park is haven of memories

Minnie McDowal Park, at the corner of Dallas and Knox streets, holds a special place in the hearts of local residents. For over 60 years the location was home to the city’s only indoor movie house, the Plaza Theatre, later known as the Tara. After suffering major storm damage, the building was raised in the 1990s and the land sold to the city, which then dedicated it as a park in honor of the theater’s longest standing and most beloved employee, Minnie McDowal.
