The risk of traffic crashes and fatalities increases when the sun sets, with nearly twothirds of pedestrian crashes and 80 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes occurring after dark.

Aircraft carrier named for Dorie Miller

The World War II Pearl Harbor hero Doris “Dorie” Miller (1919-1943), the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross for valor, was honored last this year by the U.S. Navy with an aircraft carrier named for him.

Locals know the name of Miller well as Ennis has had a school named for him since the 1950s. During segregation, the Black community’s school was first named in his honor and when a new Ennis ISD intermediate school was built over a decade ago, the school board approved the hero’s name for that facility located on Lampasas St.

Parks and Recreation launches citizen survey

Ennis Parks and Recreation is offering a season of suggestions and recommendations for consideration as part of the Active Ennis master plan. Specifically, the plan is to help meet the needs of current and future residents by building on the community’s unique parks and recreation assets.

Event to honor Veterans, Nov. 13

Ellis County Veterans and the general public are invited to attend the annual appreciation ceremony from 10 a.m. until noon at the Waxahachie Civic Center on Saturday, November 13. The event will provide a great opportunity to recognize and show respect for veterans in conjunction with the national Veterans Day slated for Nov. 11.

City of Ennis Mayors, past and present (left-to-right), Bill Lewis, (present) Angie Juenemann and Russell Thomas met with a group of locals at a truck stop on South Kaufman to honor Bill and Virginia Lewis, the last of area veterans who flew to Washington D.C. on the first Honor Flight. Marylyn Wylie, who now lives in Colorado, coordinated the luncheon.

Lions host playoff Nov. 12

For the fourth time in five years, Ennis (9-0) will play host to a Bi-District football playoff game on Friday, Nov. 12, when Denison (6-3) comes to Lion Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will not be livestreamed.

“Current season ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase their exact seats for the playoff game,” said Athletic Director Don Drake. He added that an email – with details on how to go about getting the tickets, would be sent to them on Friday, Nov. 5. Maroon seats cost $12 each and silver seats are $10 apiece.

Fire Chief Aycock announces retirement

Calling it a time to enjoy grandchildren, veteran Ennis Fire Department Chief Jeff Aycock announced his retirement from the force, effective December 31.

After approximately 10 years as chief, which followed 21 previous years as captain, Aycock, 60, informed city leadership of his decision last week. It didn’t come as a complete surprise as he had hinted at the call of fishing East Texas for months.

“It’s just time,” he told The Ennis News on Wednesday. “Time to enjoy grandkids, fishing and the rocking chair.”
