Local man recalls 1947 road tragedy

An Ennis resident, Robert T. Sanders, recently recounted his memory of a disastrous highway accident that happened in Waxahachie when he was 5 years old in 1947.

His memory of the horror of the event is still vivid after nearly 75 years. Sanders’ account of that day also speaks to the leveling, if only temporarily, of the race division that unfortunately existed in that day, particularly in Texas.

State Rep, Harrison shares future direction

Recently elected as a new member of the Texas House of Representatives, Brian Harrison officially took office on October 12 to begin a four-year term to represent District 10. He is making an effort to establish contact with newspapers in Ellis County, starting with The Ennis News.

The 39-year-old topped fellow Republican John Wray, 51, by nearly 11 points in a September 28 runoff to give the former chief of staff at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (under President Donald Trump) a key position in Austin.

People’s Choice Award Winners

Results are in and the City of Ennis collected its share of hardware for two major civic groups at last week’s Texas Downtown Conference. During the President’s Awards Gala, 10 statewide winners were announced as the People’s Choice Award Winners. Votes were collected on Facebook over October 18-22 with a local duo drawing top accolades; Best Promotional Event – Ennis’ Bluebonnet Trails Festival. Best Downtown Partner - Ennis Garden Club. Congratulations to these groups, their members, partners and sponsors.

Crowd recalls service and sacrifice of Veterans

Perhaps the largest crowd in years gave recognition and honor to the men and women who served this nation, many of them paying the ultimate price, at Veterans Memorial Park on the west end of Ennis on Thursday.

Ed Lane (left) and Robert Bell were a few of the many who dedicated the new statue, “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” which now stands at the park.

A new tree was commemorated and has been planted adjacent to the two-ton sculpted piece.

Garage fire damages home near historic district

It took misfortune on the part of longtime Ennis resident and Czech native, Jeff Marusak, to discover how fortunate he is to have so many friends.

A recent series of events, none of them good, left him vulnerable when tough luck struck again. An accidental fire in his garage, which spread quickly to an adjoining carport, woke him at 1 a.m. on Saturday night. Before the flames could be extinguished by the Ennis Fire Department, they had scorched his house and destroyed much of the contents inside the garage, carport area and a tool shed.

Protect it by getting vaccinated for flu season

Shorter days and cooler temperatures are tell-tale signs that autumn has arrived. Unfortunately, another sign of the season is the beginning of increased flu activity. Flu season can last from autumn to as late as May – peaking between December and February. According to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), last year’s flu cases were historically low, thanks in large part to widespread practice of safety measures to combat another widely-circulating respiratory illness – COVID-19 – including school closures, mask wearing and social distancing.
