Knox Street brickwork completed to Main Street

Another milestone of the downtown renewal is near 100 percent completion in the roadwork between NW Main and McKinney, a critical, two-block section of pavement that crosses over North Dallas Street in the heart of Ennis.

The last block of Knox Street, which ends at the new Welcome Center, was expected to be done a month ago. Once the ground work was finished and only new pavers for the surface of the street were needed, things came to a halt. The order of bricks arrived, but were not an exact match to the existing surface.

When assessing the skills of any Ennis High School Marching Band, one thing has been proven true. In the class they are in, it doesn’t take long to call the roll.

After earning unanimous First Division ratings for the 46th consecutive year a few weeks ago, they extended their run of Superior ratings to 64 in their 65-year history with the University Interscholastic League.

It also qualified them for the inaugural State Military Style event held Wednesday, Oct. 27. Their performance, which graded at No. 11 in the field, was hosted at Pine Tree H.S. in Longview.

Autumn Daze hits crescendo, Oct. 30-31

Next weekend, Oct. 30-31, Saturday and Sunday, music will fill the air at the bandstand on the corner of Knox and McKinney in downtown Ennis.

The concerts, four on each day, will coincide with other happenings during the final weekend of Autumn Daze. Besides the entertainment venue, revelers of all ages can take in the fall carnival, Oct. 28-31. The carnival is from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and all day and into the evenings on the weekend.

Buildings plan to re-open with liquor licenses

Planners for business projects in town are currently under-construction with three local establishments. Two of them are awaiting approval of liquor license applications from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC), and a third has cleared those hurdles years ago.

Details aren’t completely available, though preliminary work is transpiring where a new bar looks to replace the Irish themed Finn MacCool’s Pub at 207 W. Ennis Ave.

The Ennis High Band, under the direction of senior drum majors Madison Sladecek and Grace Ellen Chase and Director Gary Goodwin, earned First Division rating for the 46th year in a row on Wednesday at Lion Memorial Stadium. They will be competing again on Oct. 27 in Longview, Texas. 

Local theaters hope to return to normalcy

The Ennis theatrical community has plans to bounce back after the Covid-19 pandemic first struck last year and vaccinations have become more widespread, protecting theater patrons and employees alike.

At Theatre Rocks, 505 NW Main, operated by Bill and Suzanne Rhoten, who have entertained Ennis with plays and musicals for almost 20 years, the company is winding down its latest production of Moonlight and Magnolias by Ron Hutchinson.
