Ennis ISD serving up free meals

In response to the federal government extending the yearlong, free food program, which the Ennis Independent School District has previously offered in the summer months, the district will provide free breakfast and lunch for students this upcoming school year.

Called the Seamless Summer Meals Option program, it has benefitted families with provision for two meals a day while parents or guardians are at work. The coming year extension is on the account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pitts eschews bid as State Rep

Waxahachie resident Ryan Pitts announced on Wednesday, Aug. 4, that he will refrain from campaigning for the vacant State Representative seat for District 10. The opportunity arose over a week ago when Jake Ellzey, who was just elected for the position in November of 2020, was elected as a Congressman for District 6.

The void will be filled this year on a date to be announced by Governor Greg Abbott. State Rep is a two-year term.

Freshpet construction heads skyward

What began as a plan in Bethlehem, a suburb of Philadelphia, of a third Freshpet Kitchen, is approaching the halfway point in constructing Phase I of their new plant in Ennis.

Located at 4800 Sterilite Drive, less than a mile north of Hwy 287, General Manager Willie Everett said last week that Kitchen 3.0 is approximately 40- 45 percent completed. There will be two phases on the 68-acre parcel, 52 of them developable. The first, a 380,000 square feet facility, is fullfledged underway with steel erection taking place.

Probe launched into EPD arrest of four

What began as an alleged speeding driver on North Kaufman Street on July 17 and became an arrest when four individuals reportedly interfered with Ennis Police, has become an official investigation.

City Manager Marty Nelson responded to questions from The Ennis News in regards to the request of those arrested by their spokesman, Minister Dominique Alexander, of Next Generation Action Network, that an investigation of the events take place.

Ellzey wins all-Republican runoff over Wright

Midlothian resident and Texas State Representative Jake Ellzey defeated incumbent Susan Wright for the 6th Congressional District seat in a special Texas runoff election on Tuesday.

The 51-year-old combat pilot and current commercial airline flight captain is now at the controls of a district that Republicans have held for nearly 40 years. Joe Barton, of Ennis, who supported Ellzey, was the district’s congressman for approximately 34 of those years.

Mask on, mask off, schools respond

Return to school has its annual share of shopping for clothes and supplies as well as the Centers for Disease Control recommending indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. According to the CDC, children should return to full-time, inperson learning this fall with layered prevention strategies in place.

Too hot to swim

The heat was so intense in the late summer of 1956 that few sunbathers and swimmers were turning up at the Ennis Community Center. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported that the manager of the pool was seeing such a drop off in patronage during mid-day hours that he was considering closing after mid-morning for the rest of the week.

Major collision on bridge sends one to Parkland

Ellis County Sheriffs responded to a serious, two-vehicle, headon collision on the Lake Bardwell bridge at 1:11 p.m. on July 28. An east-bound (going towards Bardwell) silver Ford F-150 truck was struck by a west-bound, white Chevrolet dually pickup. The Chevy veered into the opposite lane for no apparent reason, according to ECSO Trooper Abreu, initiating a major wreck.

The Ennis Garden Club has announced the 2021 Summer Yards of the Season. The Yards of the Season are selected three times a year: Autumn, Spring and Summer. The yards, nominated by members of the Ennis Garden Club, are selected in each of the four EISD elementary school districts.
