If a researcher were to sit down at the end of 2021 and tabulate and record the number of times individual key words were mentioned over the course of the year, “vaccine” would surely be near the top. The advent of COVID-19 vaccines and the key role they have played in slowing the spread of the virus and helping us get closer to pandemic’s end has not only been at the forefront of global discourse but has also served as a reminder of how effective vaccination – or immunization, as it is also known – can be in protecting us from a number of illnesses both mild and severe.

Nelson lays-out safeguards against virus

Recent blanket decisions Governor Greg Abbott have limited the authority of cities, businesses and schools to establish their own safeguards against the spread of coronavirus and other variants. As a result, in compliance with the ruling, City Manager Marty Nelson has put in place procedures that can still help protect Ennis.

“Since the Governor used his emergency powers to revoke the laws that empowered local governments to implement mask requirements,” said Nelson, “I provided city staff with guidance.”

Big Boy locomotive whistled to a stop Sunday

Union Pacific’s 1940 Big Boy steam locomotive rolled through East Texas during Aug. 15-16, and maked five whistle stops in the area, including Midlothian, Waxahachie, Ennis, Corsicana and Mexia. The classic choo-choo embarked on a 10-state, eight-stop tour.

The powerful train is arrived in downtown Ennis at 10:45 am., where it stopped until 11:30 a.m. next to the train depot and museum at Ennis Avenue. Admirers had an opportunity for selfies and to see, hear and smell the world’s largest steam locomotive during its scheduled stop in E-Town.

Ennis resident Carlton Myers has made a name for himself during his eight years in the Bluebonnet City, most all of it for his good-hearted actions.

A native of Los Angeles, California and a graduate of famous Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet High School, Myers is known for his involvement with his Blue Haven Kennel Club and his training of dogs, especially multi-show winner Max, not to mention hosting events for dogowners. Then there are his social skills and amicable nature. They all compliment Carlton as an executive chef.

State Rep runoff set for Aug. 31

Governor Gregg Abbott announced in a proclamation this week that August 31 is when the election for Texas House District 10 will take place.

Jake Ellzey, of Midlothian, won the seat in November of 2020. He left the position to run for the 6th Congressional District, which he won over Susan Wright.

Tuesday, Aug. 31, will be a special election to replace Ellzey. The State Rep seat in Austin is described as “reliably red” by the Texas Tribune. They also infer the HD-10 is comprised of largely rural areas south and southeast of Dallas.

Ennis resident Pierina Otiniano announced her candidacy on Thursday, Aug. 12, for the Texas State Representative for District 10. Ellis and Henderson Counties. Special Election Tuesday, August 31, 2021. Early Voting August 23-August 27.

Along with her five-year old son, who just entered kindergarten, they call Ennis their home, though she was originally born in Peru. Her family departed South America when Pierina’s sister was diagnosed with Leukemia at a very young age. They found both healthcare and opportunity in Texas.

Wreck kills one, injures five

A 16-year-old Waxahachie female driver died as a result of a single car accident on Saturday, Aug. 7, about 2:30 p.m. at 122 Shoreside Trail, Waxahachie. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were five other passengers in the vehicle, all of them receiving serious injuries, and were transported to hospitals in the area.

World’s largest steam locomotive rolls in Aug. 15

Don’t miss a rare opportunity to view history-on-wheels next Sunday, Aug. 15, when one of the world’s most powerful steam locomotives arrives in Ennis. The train will be stopped for viewing from 10:45-11:30 a.m.

Ennis was built by the cotton industry and propelled by the railroad. During World War II Union Pacific operated some of the most modern and powerful steam locomotives ever built. Among them were the famous “Big Boys,” the largest steam locomotives in the world.

Wray re-enters the fray

An unexpected opportunity to return to office was too much for John Wray to resist. The Waxahachie native and former Texas State Representative announced last week a reversal of his plans after retiring from the same House Seat for District 10 seven months ago.

Wray, 51, held the position for three terms, beginning January 13, 2015 and ending January 12, 2021.

She’s gone with the wind

Small town and a big talent can equal even larger aspirations. Jacie Lee Gray, who graduated third in her class this year at Scurry-Rosser High School, continues to hit high notes in her approach to education, faith and musical skills.

As the only child of Jeff and Pam Gray, her knack for trying new things and selfadvocation has led to being a high-achiever. Her parents make up half of the local Blue Grass quartet, the Acoustic Sound Hounds. Pam said last week that Jacie has never been afraid to ask for help, and it has paid big dividends.
