Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, Thy-Ca: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men.

EISD police chief Scruggs honored

A veteran in law enforcement, Jeremy Scruggs, the police chief of the Ennis Independent School District Police Department, was named this week as the third highest ranking campus chief in the state of Texas.

He was voted the Second Vice President among all in the Texas School District Police Chiefs Association (which began in 1996) in a vote at the 2021-23 biennium. The newly elected president is Solomon Cook, of the Humble ISD, with First VP Bill Avera, who serves at the Jacksonville ISD. A total of eight were selected to new positions.

New chapter for new badge

New Ennis Police Department Chief, Dustin Munn, was sworn in this week by City Secretary Angie Wade. The start of his duties has officially begun, though he will be introduced and pinned at 6 p.m. during the July 20 City Commission meeting at the new Welcome Center on NW Main at Knox Street. The public is invited, though seating is limited.

Wreck on Kaufman claims one life

A one vehicle accident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on July 13 that resulted in a single fatality according to the Ennis Police Department.

Michael Coffey, 40, of Ennis, was south bound on South Kaufman in the 1900 block, near the old Gebo’s, when his vehicle, a 2007 white Toyota Prius, crossed a lane and struck a tree on the east side of the road. The driver was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Dan Cox. He was transported to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. That report has yet to be made available to The Ennis News.

Truck rescued from water

Ellis County Sheriffs, with help from the Palmer Police Department, responded to calls along I-45 on July 12 by rescuing passengers from a vehicle trapped in rising waters.

Detective Sergeant Jonathan Martinez confirmed reports of individuals in a black pickup truck who were traveling along the southbound service road near mile-marker 262. Quick and strong showers that afternoon led to surging rainwaters that surprised, and then trapped the truck and its occupants.

Kidnapper nabbed

Solid police work has resulted in the arrest of Marcus Nast, who helped abduct a seven-month-old baby in Ennis last week. The 25-year-old was nabbed at a motel in Weatherford on Thursday according to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office. He remains in custody.

News of the kidnapping, which was done with the help of the child’s mother, 20-year-old Faith Reid, and a gun, led to an Amber Alert. It was a felony due to the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Vehicle fire extinguished on Tuesday

Ennis Firefighters were called to extinguish a burning vehicle on the west end of town at 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday, July 13. According to Fire Chief Jeff Aycock there were no injuries reported at the Colonial Place Apartments on Yorkstown Drive.

EFD Fire Chief Aycock credited emergency responders, including the EFD, for quickly quenching the flames. Describing it as a “great response,” he said the fire likely originated inside a 2009 Dodge Charger.

Ennis becoming the City of Festivals

As cities are often known for their personality, Ennis surely has its own, albeit on a lesser stage than LA’s City of Angels, Kansas City as the City of Fountains for nearly 300 years, though BBQ is rising fast. New York, the Big Apple, is the City that Never Sleeps.

Our Ennis is recognized by the state as the Bluebonnet City, and for good reason. They bloom everywhere. Many might connect polka to E-Town for the 40,000 who are drawn to the national festival every Memorial Day weekend.

Congress polls open, July 19-23

In what is expected to be a very tight race for the District 6 Congressional election between Midlothian’s Jake Ellzey and Susan Wright, of Arlington, early balloting during July 19- 23 could prove the difference. Ellis County voters can cast their ballot at any vote center polling location in the county during both the early vote or on the election date.

The Special Runoff Election for the U.S. Representative of District 6 for Washington D.C. has been set for Tuesday, July 27. Both candidates are conservative Republicans.
