Mark Twain added to that line, “...and a sleepy conscience, these make for the ideal life.” Friends of the Ennis Public Library held a successful book sale Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “We would like to thank all those who came and shopped to support us,” said Secretary Diane Liska. “All our friends are volunteers and the money raised goes towards the programs held at the library throughout the year for all age groups.”

Jewelry designer Theresa Giron, who has been making special appearances at the The Shop at the Raphael House, 500 W. Ennis Ave., recently met with clients as part of the store’s pre-Christmas campaign. She will be back in mid-October to meet with customers again, assured shop owner Harriett Adams.

“This is a unique shopping adventure,” Adams added. “We are offering a Christmas gift reserve. Love it in September, buy it in December. This is not a layaway. No money down. Just ask us to hold it and pay by December 7.”

Traffic stop, Pivo, make drug bust

A routine traffic stop resulted in Christopher Horton, of Ennis, being arrested with over 600 grams of cocaine in his vehicle on Monday.

Officer Jacob Yrias and K9 officer Pivo were on patrol when Horton, 33, was spotted not wearing his seatbelt in his Oldsmobile Intrigue. Yrias initiated a traffic stop though the driver refused to pull over. A car chase ensued and when the driver finally obliged, Yrias searched the driver and found prescription pills in the pocket of the driver’s jacket.

Briles fends off doubters, now 4-0

Art Briles, the reported scapegoat at Baylor over a sex scandal involving a handful of players, received good news recently when the transfer of two football players from Colorado to Mount Vernon, Texas, where Briles has returned to coaching.

As announced this summer in The Daily News, since being ousted at Baylor in 2016, Briles has sought to continue his career in coaching. The Mount Vernon ISD hired him in May to head the Tigers football program. The move brought considerable media attention, though somewhat favorable.

Lockhart continues to sic ‘em in Waco

Baylor (3-0) defeated Rice (0-4) in Houston, 21-13, on Saturday in a defensive game that saw former Ennis all-stater James Lockhart register a season-best four tackles (3 solo), with two TFL’s, including his first sack of the year and a fumble recovery. The Bears led 21-3 at halftime.

The 6’2, 263-lb senior DE also registered a pass break-up in addition to a pair of QB hurries. Lockhart, who wears No. 9, is seventh on the team with eight tackles and third in TFL’s. He is majoring in sport pedagogy, an introduction into teaching and coaching.

Noel leading St. Ed’s XC team

Alyssa Noel was the top finisher for St. Edward’s University at the debut cross country race this month when she placed ninth overall at the Ken Garland Invitational in Denton. The NCAA Division II Hilltoppers came in fifth overall in an event won by SMU. TCU, UT-Arlington and North Texas, a few of Division I teams that were ahead. Her timing in the 5K was 19:33, which was a personal record. She was announced the Raising Cane’s Player of the Week for her performance. “I thought it went really well,” said Head Coach Ryan Ponsonby.

Four-legged officer joins EISD campus police

Dogs learn much from humans, but they have been known to teach a boy about fidelity, perseverance and to turn around three times before lying down. As a close companion to man, they are said to be the only thing on earth that loves people more than it loves itself.

Ennis ISD recently added man’s best friend to its campus police force in a two-year old Belgian Malinois. The Dutch Shepherd mix is considered a canine officer, and his handler is Matthew Blair.

On Sept. 17 the Ennis Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Covenant Christian Academy. After a successful pilot year, CCA has officially begun this year with expansion. Doubling the number of classrooms and facilities, CCA entered the 2019-20 school year with a new and remodeled Junior High and High School wing. In addition, they have doubled the elementary classrooms. Plus, they are now offering excellent core education classes like Spanish, theater arts, music, art and Bible. Once a month they can be a part of 4-H and culinary arts as well.

A local woman’s Emmy nomination has been the talk of the town, drawing congratulations from friends all over the country. TV production designer Lindsay Lipscomb, daughter of Ennis High counselor Diane Lanicek, said the recognition from her professional peers, friends and family has been a surreal experience.

“Special, the Netflix show that I production-designed was nominated for four Emmys,” Lipscomb explained. “One was for best short form drama/comedy. The other three were nominations for three of the actors in the show.”
