School bells to ring Aug. 15

In anticipation of christening the start of school on August 15, the eleven campuses of the Ennis Independent School District are readying for the first bells to ring.

Jay Tullos, who is set to begin his first year as superintendent of Ennis schools, spoke of the attraction of a crisp start.

“There is a smell of fresh wax in the hallways and freshly cut grass all around,” he said. “and the finishing touches are being completed on facilities in preparation for the return of students.”

Ellis Co. burn ban implemented

Ellis County Commissioners Court met on June 30 in the historic Ellis County Courthouse with Fire Marshall Tim Birdwell recommending that the commissioners implement a burn ban countywide. With County Judge Todd Little presiding, all four commissioners were in agreement.

I thought I’d share in this edition of Town Topics a little further information on the Reagor murder case that was first mentioned in this column in 2017. Here is a short news item that appeared in the Ennis Daily News on June 24, 1904, telling of the apprehension of two of the four men wanted in connection with Reagor’s killing.

Marshalltown Community College (Iowa) recognized 189 students who earned inclusion on the spring term dean’s list, including Ennis’ own Ryan Carter. His GPA during this semester, January to May) was a perfect 4.0. To be eligible for the dean’s list, students must have taken 12 or more credit hours during the semester (a full-time class load) and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average while attending MCC classes in Marshalltown, at Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell, or online.

Unaware SAGU student wins money for tuition

Southwestern Assemblies of God University will be gaining a student that has additional, unexpected money for his tuition this fall.

Jacob Campbell won $1,390 in the KBEC radio station “No Where but Texas” contest last Friday. Campbell was the second name to be drawn for the contest and was able to call in within the five-minute time limit to claim his prize.
