Containing the passing wizardry of Collin Drake and his band of longdistant missiles was an exercise in futility for North Forney. Instead they discovered that No. 1 ranked Ennis has a defense and special teams that can win on their own in a 38-14 Lions victory.

The meeting of unbeaten football teams left only one, Ennis (7-0), who clinched their second District 8-5A championship in as many years. It also extended their string of playoff berths to nine straight.

A tale of two seasons in one came to an abrupt halt for Avalon on Nov. 20 when unbeated Abbott (11- 0) broke away from an 18-6 lead at intermission with 33 unanswered points in the second half to win going away, 51-6.

Avalon, who went 11-1 a year ago, finished 4-6 in a rebuilding year. They began the year with a 58-37 home setback to Abbott, then capped the campaign against the Panthers. In 2019 the Orange Wings enjoyed their best season ever, and it also included a date with Abbott in Week One, though the Flyers dominated the Panthers, 42-7, just as they had in 2018, 38-14.

A couple of weeks ago afforded me five volleyball matches at the mic as the PAA (Public Address Announcer), four of them at the high school level. Ennis hosted three state playoff games over the past two weeks, and one of them was most memorable. A pair of Class 2A teams, Crawford (30-3), ranked No. 2, and No. 9 Tom Bean (22- 4), played a regional semi-final at the Ensign Gym. A huge crowd traveled in support of both teams. Crawford, state champions in 2017 and again last year, played like it in a three-game sweep, 25-4, 25-8 and 25-12.
