Sunnyvale powers past Ferris, 38-14

Sunnyvale busted free from a 7-6 lead by scoring 24 unanswered points to knock Ferris out of the Class 4A state playoffs with a 38-14 victory on Thursday. The Raiders were bigger and more physical, not to mention played with a chip on their shoulder.

Italy (8-1) stifles Marlin, 61-6, earn title

Playing as a team on a mission, Italy (8-1) pounded second place Marlin (4-4) by a 61-6 count to win the District 8-2A championship, their first since Hank Hollywood coached them to a 9-5 record in 2012.

The Gladiators, who have won five games in a row, left no doubt about the outcome. Junior RB Jaiden Barr ran for three early touchdowns and Italy held the visitors to 57 yards on 48 plays. Barr led a 355-yard ground attack with 157 on just 12 carries.

Avalon falls to defending state champs

Blum and Avalon, state-ranked teams a year ago, overcame sluggish starts, the Bobcats were 2-3 at midseason and Avalon floundered at 0-3. Blum, 13-2 last season, bounced back to win their last four games and the District 11-1A title by playing their best outing of the year in a 72-27 win at Eagle Field.

Avalon came to life with a 4-1 surge until the Bobcats shut them down.

Ferris holds their own against Glen Rose

No. 10 Glen Rose (8-1) outlasted Ferris (4-5), 35-8, on Friday in a playoff tune-up for both teams. Both teams stuck to their bread-and-butter running games, with the visiting Tigers capping drives better than Ferris.

Glen Rose, who suffered their only loss of the season the week before, 31- 28, to Grandview (10-0), and sought to retain their mojo ahead of their home playoff date with Nevada Community (4-5) on Nov. 12. It was the fifth straight undefeated district championship for the Red Cats, all in HC Cliff Watkins five year tenure.

Palmer skins Gators, 65-12

For the second year in a row and third in school history, all during HC Don Waddle’s tenure, Palmer has won a district championship in football. The Bulldogs had to beat Dallas Gateway in the season finale and they had to have help from Blooming Grove.

Playing for the third time in seven days, No. 25 ranked Ennis finally met their match in the Class 5A Regional Semifinals, falling 10-1 to No. 1 Highland Park.

Ennis plays Forney this coming Friday, Nov. 13, which will complete the three games leading up the District 8-5A position-night playoffs. On Nov. 20, possibly at home again, the Lions, assuming they defeat both Crandall and Forney, will be 6-0. They will play the other group’s first place team, likely North Forney. The Falcons are currently undefeated. The winner will be declared the district champions.
