ENNIS TAKES WAXAHACHIE TO WOODSHED

Vaulting to scores on four of the first five times they had the ball as No. 1 ranked Ennis (2-0) took arch-rival Waxahachie (1-2) to the woodshed in a 38-0 rout on Friday night. The U.S. Highway 287 sign will remain in Ennis for another year.

Methodical and with the precision of clockwork, Head Coach Keith Howard’s Ennis tennis team took another step to winning another district champion with a 14-5 triumph Tuesday at Corsicana. The victory propelled their district team winning streak to 72 matches. Players’ names and scores are posted below.

Boys strings sizzle in 14-5 win at ‘Cana

Known as the sport of kings, Ennis tennis, led by the boys going 9-0 in their matches, soundly defeated Corsicana, 14- 5, on Tuesday. The Lady Lions won more half of their matches (5-4) as well, with Ennis only coming up short in mixed doubles.

Chance Kozlovsky and Jacob Mraz won their singles matches earning 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1 in solo rackets, and then paired up for 6-4, 6-4 wins.

Josh Noel and Chandler Erisman did likewise, 6-3 and 6-1 and 6-3 and 7-5, respectively, then teamed up to take doubles as a team, 6-0 and 6-2. That’s an impressive 6-0 by those four.

Ferris overruns Hillcrest, 22-7

A pair of long touchdowns by senior WR Brendon Winsor and an opportunistic defense powered Class 4A Ferris (3-2) to a 22-7 road win over Class 5A Hillcrest (1-1) at Franklin Stadium.

The Yellowjackets, who had not played in three weeks, united for what HC Brandon Layne called “without a doubt a team win. The defense contained their athleticism, special teams controlled field position and scored the decisive TD, and the offense ground the ball and the clock,” he said.

Battle for 287

Next Friday, Oct. 9, the rivalry for Hwy 287 bragging rights is scheduled between Ennis and Waxahachie. The game will take place at Lion Memorial Stadium with a 7:30 p.m.

Do your part by donning the Maroon and White, with North 287 visitors to spread their share of Green and White. Waxahachie leads the all-time series with 51 wins to 50 by Ennis.

Ennis took the 287 sign after beating the Tribe a year ago, 21-13. Both the Lions and Indians won their opener last week.
