Ennis netters swept in opener, 3-0

Ennis opened the volleyball season at home on Tuesday with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Maypearl. The win improved the Class 3A Panthers to 12-2. They took advantage of the Lady Lions’ lack of experience to sweep the three games, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-20.

UNBEATEN PALMER CRUISES, 42-20

Junior Gabe Bolden scored the game’s first three touchdowns and Palmer (4-0) went on to thump Groesbeck (2-1) in a 42-20 verdict.

Midway through the opening quarter Bolden, playing safety, intercepted a pass over the middle. A few plays later he powered cross the goal for a 7-0 lead after Joe King’s extra-point kick.

Meanwhile the Groesbeck backfield resembled wildebeests crossing crocodile-infested waters. DT Damon Herrera and LB Collin Graves and others tore through the Goats offensive line like paper dolls during a 28-0 first half.

Italy remains perfect (4-0), hammers Mildred

Class 2A Italy is off to a 4-0 start after grounding 3A Mildred, 42-6, at Gladiator Coliseum. Junior quarterback Jayden Saxon connected on a pair of touchdowns to senior receiver Kort Holley, the first went for 10 yards in the first-quarter, and the second from 39 yards out ended the first half with the Olde Gold on top, 28-6.

Jackets hold off Farmersville, 17-10

Ferris used a quick start and benefited from their defense resisting a late scoring bid to whip Farmersville, 17-10, on Friday. The Yellowjackets, now 2-2, trailed once, 10-8, but took a one-point lead at the half and never relinquished it.

What is normally a huge event on the area cross country map when 30 teams converge on Jaycee Park for the Lions Den, has had its ears trimmed and tail shortened, but winners at the event still earn their roar. Saturday morning, Sept. 19, kicks off the season in Ennis.

BBQ smoke wafting across Gladiator Coliseum left visiting Rice hungry while Italy plowed through the Bulldogs defense for a 35-7 win that was tougher than expected. After Rice grabbed a quick lead, the hosts got the equalizing touchdown on a short run by junior QB Jayden Saxon (6’2, 210). The game turned on a defensive play by the Olde Gold. A scramble for a loose ball was recovered by Jay’lon Hernandez, who pounced on the pigskin at the Rice 40. On fourth and four, Saxon pitched right to Jaiden Barr (6’1, 215), who cut upfield to move the chains.
