Like an oak tree attracts lightning, the Ennis front seven on defense is drawn to the ball carrier. Previously unbeaten Royse City, who entered Friday’s game averaging 500.8 yards per game, was struck for losses 13 times during their 44 plays, and was able to account for a meager 158 yards of total offense in their 37-21 loss at Ennis.

Scoring all of their points in the middle two quarters was enough to give Class 1A Avalon a 52-42 win over visiting Trinidad. The tougher-than-expected win lifted the Eagles record to 6-0 while Trinidad slipped to their third straight defeat at 2-3.

Avalon found themselves in arrears, 8-0, at the end of the first quarter. Three quick Orange Wing scores in the second erased the deficit, 22-8, though the Trojans hung around with a ground game that methodically chewed up time and over 300 yards. It allowed them to draw to within 35-28 in the third quarter.

On a night when the Ennis was the hammer, previously unbeaten Royse City was the nail in a 38-21 home triumph for the Lions. The win was reportedly No. 600 in Ennis history and snapped an eight-game streak of wins by Royse City.

Ennis Cross Country wrapped up two months of training by competing in two big events over the past ten days, including Thursday’s Race at the Lake. Both the varsity boys and girls teams, younger than in years, finished 22nd and 20th, respectively, in a tough field of 30 Class 5A and 6A schools.

Held at the 784-acre Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, located on the northwest shore of Joe Pool Lake, the major race was the regular season finale before the District 14-5A Cross Country Championship on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Cleburne Sports Complex.
