Big 5 VB teams start league season

All five Big 5 volleyball teams have played roughly five or six weeks of matches, many of them in tournaments, and each have either begun their district season or are about to start. Their lineups have fluctuated and coaches have tuned-up their rotation and tried to find the most effective combination.

Here is an overview of their records, starters and key players.

Italy has the area’s best record (10-5) under Shauna Steinmetz. Powered by the senior duo of Courtney Riddle and Shaniaya Johnson, big hitters on the front line, the Lady Glads are playing well.

Letting up is not in HC Keith Howard’s lexicon. His Ennis Lions tennis team has not lost a district match in nearly 10 years, and they rolled over Waco University H.S. on Tuesday, 10-0. It was the fifth consecutive win for Team Maroon after two tough setbacks to start the year.

Now 5-2 overall and 3-0 in district action, Ennis plays host to Cleburne at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Ennis Tennis Center. Admission is free.

Over hill and dale they hit the dusty trail against a field of 28 teams at Saturday’s 13th Annual Garey Horner Cross Country Invitational in South Dallas. Ennis was wellrepresented by both high school and junior high harriers at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex.

HC Lonnie Redning was elated to see the effort by the young varsity girls team, who finished fourth with 112 points. Four of them bunched together and placed in the Top 25, led by sophomore Olivia Rodriguez, who finished 19th with a 22:12 clocking.

There would be no drama on a full-moon night when all-business Ennis mashed Kaufman, 49-14, on the road. It was a sweet payback for last year’s 37-7 drubbing Team Maroon suffered at the hands of the K-Lions.

Two weeks the Oval E’s rolled an out -manned Waxahachie team, 21-13, and brought home the spoils of the 287 sign. It was a big, emotional win over the archrival Indians.

Last week Ennis lit up the night in building a 34-14 second quarter lead over private-school power Bishop Lynch, then flatlined late in the half and throughout the second half in a 41-34 setback.

District 8-5A season accelerates

Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild captured the attitude of starting a road trip. Get your motor running, head out on the highway, looking for adventure in whatever comes our way.

This weekend the nine football teams in District 8-5A kick off a stretch of eight games over nine weeks to determine a league champion and three other playoff qualifiers.

Defending champion Corsicana and this year’s pre-season favorite, Ennis, are the top teams to beat. The other two post-season participants from 2018 were Kaufman and Sulphur Springs. Of the four, only Corsicana won in the playoffs.

Receiving record, like Spencer, gone in a flash

Fans witnessing the chainbreak in East Dallas a week ago witnessed the alltime best performance by an Ennis receiver when No. 7, Laylon Spencer, put up numbers to become No. 1 in the books.

In fact, by halftime the 6’2, 150-lb blur had already smashed the schoolrecord. Back in 2000, a mark that had been standing for 19 years, was eclipsed in two quarters against Bishop Lynch.

Fire-Drake blazes for 427 yards, 4 TD’s

Taking off the wrapper after focusing on the running game at Waxahachie, HC Sam Harrell unsheathed junior quarterback Collin Drake at Bishop Lynch last Friday.

The right-hander was hot as hay-harvesting when he torched the Friars for 360 yards and four TD’s in the first half. It was one of the most impressive outings in the history of Ennis football. Lynch adjusted to reveal Drake was mortal in the second half, though he still completed 17-of-32 for 427 yards and those four scoring strikes.
