Ennis strings rank No. 25 in state

While it may sound like old hat, Ennis varsity tennis is state ranked again, the recognition of HC Keith Howard and Wyatt Johnson’s prowess in recruiting and building new players and creating an environment where good players flourish, is always welcome. The Lions, currently on a six match winning streak, are 4-0 in district action. A young squad, they are showing flashes of what could be yet another team ready for a deep post-season run. The Texas Tennis Coaches their most recent rankings, and the Lions are at No. 25 in Class 5A, and are No. 9 in Region II.

Junior quarterback Collin Drake accounted for all four touchdowns, two on the ground, two through the air to lead Ennis to a 33-14 victory over North Forney. The Lions led from start to finish, but never dominated a Falcons team who were 3-0 but had yet to be tested.

Ennis tackles new bass fishing season

Second year members of the Texas High School Bass Association, Ennis, looks to build on a good debut in 2018 when they were No. 11 in the 26-team Central Division.HC Tommy Copeland said the team “has some tough young freshmen,” adding, “we will see how they do.” While there are no girls on the roster this year, the aligning of anglers has witnessed different pairings for many. Altogether there are 11 teams, ten of them as pairs. Each team has an adult boat captain, and they unite their total catch, limited to their largest five (with a minimum length set by the THSBA).

Tommy Copeland is picking up speed when others are prone to slowing down. Teaching in the role paved by the late Kelly Boston, he teaches horticulture at Ennis High School. While he admits that no one can adequately fill Boston’s shoes of influencing the lives of students, Copeland’s home-spun style is a hit with many.

Don’t be fooled into thinking he’s a country bumpkin just because he brings a fresh batch of heirloom tomatoes and other vegetables from his Oak Grove Organic Farm to the Ennis Farmers Market. He has also taught physics.
