In my youth, while courting a young lady of plenty, we went to see a classic opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Composed in 1785 by Wolfgang Amadeus, it was playing in West Palm Beach. It tells how the servants Figaro and Susanna succeed in getting married, which foiled the efforts of their philandering employer, Count Almaviva, who had tried to seduce Susanna. They taught him a lesson in fidelity.

My date would surely be impressed with my culture and high brow. While she adored the performance, I was never more bored in my life. But the fat guy in tights sure could sing.

A parting gift from haters

I’ll admit, I had no idea that throngs of people were gathering at the U.S. capitol grounds last week. The declaration by electors to cast official votes has almost always been a formality, though Democrats had threatened to turn the table on Donald Trump when he was elected. On two other occasions in the past two decades, each time by the same party, the move was attempted but never amounted to anything.

Over 90 years ago there lived a man with bulging forearm muscles, a squinty eye, and an affinity for spinach. He appeared to get angry every episode, similar to Bill Bixby playing the Incredible Hulk in the 1978 TV series.

And we all got anxious when he got the slightest bit perturbed. His shirt ripped and he turned mad green. In Popeye the Sailor man, when he got riled up, he’d say, “That’s all I can stands, ‘cause I can’t stands no more!”

Musings at the final passing of that blasted year of 2020… Methinks the pandemic has forever ruined the strategic purchase and placement of mistletoe. Hanging a sprig of it – stems, leaves and berries, is part of folklore that permits one to plant a smooch on a desiring or unsuspecting person.

Theme to Rocky

One of my choice friends, from Syracuse, New York, often uses the phrase “I’m Rescued” as a theme for his life. He even uses it as an email address.

Let’s be honest, there is something innate within all of us that hopes to be delivered, to be saved from danger, to sing like Fontella Bass in 1965 when she belted out, “Rescue Me.” Railroad damsels tied to the tracks waiting for someone, anyone, even Snidely Whiplash, to set us free from pending doom.

AOC was right

It is not often that N.Y. Democrat, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or AOC as she known by some, says something I agree with. Actually, not at all, until this week.

The U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district turned 31 in October, though reversing those numbers would better explain her wacky way of thinking. Her district represents part of the Bronx, portions of north-central Queens, and Rikers Island in New York City. Why they would elect and then re-elect the former bartender is beyond me.

Telling the troof

When it comes to telling the truth, or knowing the truth, there is plenty of untruths being spoken. We would like to believe that people under oath will, in fact, tell the troof, the whole troof an nuthin buts the troof.

The truth is, we really want truth that sits well with us, that agrees with us, that requires little if any change from us. People we look for to tell us the truth, often do not. If they did, we likely would stop trusting in them.

What a year for gripers and people who feel slighted or wronged. In fact, even perceived mistreatment has been given front-page headlines as well as trending news and film at 11. While some is merit-worthy, it has prompted an endless string of guaranteed attention.

Thanks to the national media and a few activist organizations, it appears anyone with a victim mentality has found not only support and a group of protesters on stand-by, but are provided sound bytes as though they are all connected.

Don’t be surprised if a political apocalypse takes place in the coming weeks. If you’ve been paying attention to the media, both print and electronic, the Democratic Party is not going to accept anything less than a coronation in January.

Why else would there be so many stories with Nancy Pelosi saying how they will forcibly remove President Donald Trump if there is a disputed outcome. That is called a coup, or ousting, overthrow or a takeover of an existing government from power, likely with violent means.
