Choir performs downtown, Oct. 2

Always a crowd-pleaser, the award-winning Ennis Choral Department proudly presents their annual, fall concert, Bless the USA, outdoors next Saturday morning, 10 a.m., downtown.

Head Choir Director Jason Gadberry describes the performance as a concert of patriotic songs and spirituals. The top choir that earned sweepstakes honors in 2020, returns for the Oct. 2 show during the Farmers Market.

According to Gadberry, the concert has been moved to an outdoor location in order to provide the safest concert experience for both the performers and the audience.

Keep Ennis Beautiful has announced that the 2021 North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge (NTCCC) has officially begun. The North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge is a friendly competition among North Texas communities to see who can cumulatively pick up the most litter between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31.

Memories of Ennis - Jack Lummus: Who was he?

Who was Lt. Jack Lummus, the man whose name has been embraced by the city of Ennis for his bravery? The following biography of Lummus was written as a monologue for a tour of Myrtle Cemetery in 2016 in which the lives of famous citizens were profiled as visitors stopped at their gravesites. Monologues, which included a number of other well-known Ennis residents, were read by local actors under the direction of the the Ennis Public Theatre and the Ennis Historical Society.

Mark LaFollett mourned by many

The death of a man with extensive Ennis roots has caused a groundswell of grief among his many friends and one-time neighbors. Mark LaFollett, 53, was living in Tyler, but had spent his youth in Ennis where he graduated from EHS in 1986. He died in Tyler on Sept. 6 from complications of Covid-19.

LaFollett, married and the father of two sons and a daughter, had served honorably in the U. S. Army for eight years. He had been employed by the City of Ennis and Ennis Ford and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Ennis Historical Society restarts

The recently announced reboot of the Ennis Historical Society (formerly the Ennis Heritage Society) is continuing smoothly, according to Treasurer Sugar Glaspy, one of the founders of the organization.

Glaspy released the following letter to group members and the local press:

“Hello to everyone!”

“I just wanted to let you know how excited we are to be re-booting the Ennis Historical Society....again!”
