A chapter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles was formed in Ennis by Deputy Grand President J. A. Bowen of Fort Worth with 64 members. A banquet followed. The following Ennis men were elected and installed as officers: Joe A. Hillyer, president; Dr. J. D. Wingate, also president; J. R. Straughan, vice president. W. H. Nichola, chaplain; S. H. Brown, secretary; L. L. Latimer, treasurer; J. N. Roper, inside guard; Ruby Rooker, outside guard; Dr. L. E. Clark, aerie physician; Archer Dunkerley, W. S. Robinson and W. H. Brown, trustees.

It was reported that a Farmers’ Institute would be established in Ennis and that it would function under the direction of the Hon. Ed R. Kone, state commissioner of agriculture, and Joe E. Edmondson.

In the perception of many in the old days, as you may have heard, a telegram often brought bad news. That was the case when J. H. Dodson, a merchant with stores in Ennis and Alsdorf, received a telegram stating that his brother, W. C. Dodson, also once an Ennis resident, fell from a wagon in Amarillo and was killed.

Carriage rides to bring Victorian Christmas cheer to downtown

Holiday carriage and surrey rides, spreading Christmas cheer, continued yesterday and will take place over the next three weekends in Ennis. These ticketed events (see online link below) are scheduled for between 5:30 and 9 p.m. on Dec. 10th, 17th, and 18th.

“Experience holiday magic in historic downtown Ennis via a horse drawn carriage or surrey through charming, tree-lined historic neighborhoods and downtown aglow with new rooftop lights,” enthuses Ennis: A Main Street City which is organizing the rides, sponsored by Ennis Regional Medical Center.

Downtown Ennis as a destination - never looked better. Alive and lit-up, the annual parade and block party, the Christmas Bluebonnet Market and the allure of North Dallas Street, Knox and NW Main Streets alive with shoppers, revelers and wide-eyed children. Thursday’s Lights of Ennis festivities were nothing short of magical. 

NARFE December Meeting

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), Chapter 1191, will hold its monthly meeting at the Bella Italia Restaurant in Ennis on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The guest speaker will be Kim Holman, Executive Director of Waxahachie Care, a nonprofit food pantry and utility assistance organization in Waxahachie. Attendees are encouraged to bring food items or financial assistance to support Waxahachie Care as part of NARFE’s annual Christmas food drive. Chapter officers will also be elected for 2022.

FUMC to Host Thanksgiving Service

Ennis-area residents are invited to a Thanksgiving Community Service at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21, at the First United Methodist Church. It is located near downtown at 300 N. Sherman Street. A number of churches have collaborated to plan the ecumenical service.

According Pastor Darrell Nelson, of the Ennis Ministerial Alliance, the wearing of face-masks is optional.

We don’t doubt his age. Any place half as good as our friends say North Texas is ought to cause people to double the Biblical span three score and 10 years!”
