EISD Administrator Dr. Darin Jolly visited four campuses on Veterans Day and played TAPS on the trumpet. While he did not cause anyone to forget legendary trumpet player and Tonight Show Band Director Doc Severinsen, he drew attention to the spirit behind the holiday at Dorie Miller, Jack Lummus, Alamo DAEP and Ennis H.S.

Antiques expert David Gregory dies

David Gregory, 72, a noted antiques appraiser from North Carolina who moved to Ennis shortly after his sister, actress and author Sandra Wakefield, relocated here, died on Nov. 3. Gregory was associated with the Ennis News in 2007-08, contributing articles and columns on collecting and evaluating antiques.

1980s band inspires album for local musician

Ennis singer Brandon Hixson is releasing an album of tunes that has helped define him as a musician.

“I am currently working on a project called Songs That Shaped Me,” Hixson explained. “The album will include ten to 12 songs that really impacted me as a child. I recorded two Quarterflash songs, Harden My Heart and Take Me To Heart.”

He says the Quarterflash ditties are some of the most iconic of those included on the album because of how important the band’s influence has been in his life.

City groups collecting Toys for Tots

Ellis County Toys for Tots is collecting gifts for children 14-and-under for another week. Residents, churches, community organizations and businesses will be receiving packages through Saturday, Nov. 20 in Ennis.

The nationally recognized group aim to supply a gift or more to applicants, which are available at the Welcome Center at 201 NW Main Street at Knox Street.

Two Houston-based railroad-employed brothers who shared a room in Ennis on stopovers actually went two years without even seeing each other, or so a 1939 syndicated column claimed. The brothers’ shifts never overlapped so, although they shared the same bed in the boarding house, they were never there at the same time. The men, J. E. O’Leary and Conductor D. L. O’Leary, maintained separate residences in Houston and in different parts of town
