The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1191 held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, OCt. 8, 2019, at the Asian King Buffet in Waxahachie. The guest speaker was Mark Arnold, Ellis County Extension Agent with the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service located at 701 S. I 35 E in Waxahachie. He has been with the Extension Service since 1989. The speaker works with row crops, beef cattle, and the Master Naturalist Program.

Texas troopers allege health discrimination

A union for troopers has sued the state of Texas over a new policy that limits the size of officers’ waistlines.

According to AP reports, the Texas Department of Public Safety is implementing new fitness requirements under which male officers’ waistlines may be no larger than 40 inches and women’s waists not more than 35 inches around.

“Those who cannot meet the standards could potentially face disciplinary action including reassignment, denied overtime or deemed ineligible for promotion,” a San Antonio Express article claims.

Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds. In addition, a 2017 study from researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that aggressive driving can contribute to a reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic.
