The City of Ennis is closely monitoring the national outbreak of the Coronavirus, now known as COVID-19. The Department of Health Services is receiving regular updates from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and is working in conjunction with The Texas Department of Health Services (SDHS) to ensure the city has best practices in place for public safety.

The City of Ennis is fully capable of providing all essential services (Police, Fire, Health, Water, Wastewater and Sanitation) and has contingency plans in place should the situation warrant it.

New group announces Bio Blitz at Lake Bardwell

Considered one of the area’s untapped resources of wildlife, nature and recreation, Lake Bardwell, is about to receive some much needed attention and affection.

Impounded as a reservoir in 1964 at a cost of $12 million, the area has yet to be surveyed for baseline (inventory) since it was created. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who constructed and serve the lake, along with KeepEnnisBeautiful.com, are coordinating a Bio Blitz for the sake of pursuing restoration activities and to generate public-use data.

Twenty-five years in law enforcement might seem a tad late to be making changes in the beat of a veteran policeman. This opportunity, however, was too good to let it pass. A local rancher from the Cowboy Church in Palmer gave a horse to Ennis police officer Rodney Rickman, his wife, Joey, and their family, which includes their children, Raylee, Jonas and Cash. The horse, named Dude, is a 13-year old teenage American Quarter Horse.

Bluebonnet Pre-Walk at Kachina Prairie

Kachina Prairie, 1816 W Baldridge St., at Lake Clark will be the site of a Bluebonnet Festival Wildflower Pre-Walk next month, hosted by the Indian Trail Master Naturalist Chapter. A workday to clear paths for the walk us set for next week, March 20. The Bluebonnet Fest Pre-Walk will take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., April 13. Last year’s “Wildflower Walk” was held during the Bluebonnet Trails and Festival but was rained out.

The Latin word “liminal” means, the betwixt and between place where all transformation happens. It is precisely when we are betwixt and between, we are not in control, we are out of our comfort zone, this is so often where spiritual growth can take place.

Much of the work of the Bible is to get people into liminal space, and to keep them there long enough so they can learn something essential. Liminal space is always holy ground, but it actually takes a while to get those shoes off.

For Lions Club, seeing is believing

The Ennis Noon Lions Club held the second of two eye glass clinics on Wednesday, March 4, inside the Family Life Center at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Thirty students, from elementary through high school were on tap to receive new eye glasses. Scheduled twice a year, the projects by the Lions Club are evidence they live up to their motto, “We Serve.” During the afternoon, school nurses did a great job of connecting Lions Club members like Kathy Cikanek and James Moore with students in need of glasses. The nurses directed the work and better vision was the result.

Artistic Director Bill Rhoten is looking forward to his next locally-produced locally – An Orphan’s Adventure which opens April 24 – he and his team of cast and crew, as well as his managing director (and wife) Suzanne are preparing for the Richardson premier of Mojave, an Old West tale written by Bill based on incidents in Suzanne’s family history.

Super Tuesday held the potential to affect the national races for President and State races for U.S. Senator and Representatives. In Ellis County, the races that had opposition narrowed the field to the candidates who will stand for election on November 3.

On the Republican side of the primary elections, no surprise, Donald Trump took the majority of the votes with over 93 percent in the county.
