Reshuffled cards would keep Lions, Tigers together

University Interscholastic League officials will release the new district realignments, which were projected by the Dallas Morning News this week on the eve of the Feb. 3 official announcement.

The shuffling of the cards happens every two years and it applies to football, with other sports getting similar, but not identical, new addresses. The primary reason is to account for changes in school enrollment and how it impacts competition.

Monday is a huge day for athletic directors and football head coaches as the UIL unveils the new district alignments, which prompts the need for the scheduling of non-district games.

For that reason there are numerous, large gatherings where AD’s and coaches meet to learn of their new directions, schedule-making as well as to socialize with their peers. The Ennis News coverage of Eastern Ellis County schools — Ennis and Palmer and Ferris to the north and Avalon and Italy to the south, will include results for each. But where will Big 5 coaches congregate?

Lions stave off Corsicana rally, win 57-50

Looking like an award-winning ice sculpture for three quarters, the Ennis boys basketball team built a 19-point lead then watched it nearly melt away before hanging on to defeat Corsicana, 57-50, on Tuesday at the Ensign Gym.

The Tigers turned up the heat and Ennis melted like butter on a hot griddle, but they still managed to sweep the season series against their I-45 neighbors. The victory gave the Lions a 4-3 mark in District 14-5A while the Tigers, who lost 58-54 to Ennis last month, dropped to 1-6.

Rackets were hot during very cool weather as the Ennis junior varsity tennis team turned in victorious results last week at the make-up of the Frostbite Tournament.

Head Coach Wyatt Johnson praised several who posted big wins against tough competition, one of them in a first place finish was the boys doubles duo of Jayden Davis and Daniel Janousek.

Heartbreaking was the passing of sports icon Kobe Bryant on Sunday morning. The news first arrived on my laptop from Reuters, and then, like groggy eyes on the day of rest, ten minutes later began a rapid-fire of the kind of news you don’t want to hear of anyone’s death… unless you’re the Hollywood elite pleading for a violent death for the president, first lady and their offspring. That is malice and it is disgusting.

If it was only a game, then the Grand Canyon was just a hole the ground. Ennis, 5-5 a year ago exceeded the expectations of experts during the fall of 2019 by going 12-2 and nearly knocking off the state champions from Aledo.

Starting against one of two teams with more wins than losses against Ennis, the Battle of 287 was at Lumpkins Stadium. The area's pre-season No. 13 ranked Lions produced four methodical drives to control the game. QB Collin Drake was 15-of-21 for 202, found TE Clayton Jenkins (8-121) a lot and Dyllan Santos for 32 on third-and-20 to move the chains. Two first half marches ended on Davion Beasley (9-51) TD runs of 2 and 16 yards, and workhorse Jarius Jones (17 -101), scored from the four with 7:25 left for a 21-6lead. DE Jarveon Williams was a terror; 16 tackles, 6 for lost yardage (TFL) and two sacks. LB Payton Chapman and DB Stephan Townsend made 14 and 10 tackles.

Ennis gives Owls reason to be blue, 59-40

Junior Laylon Spencer poured in 13 points to lead a balanced attack and a solid defensive effort paced Ennis to a 59-40 victory at home on Tuesday night. After a month of roster changes and erratic play, the Lions are now in third place at 3-3 in the seven-team District 14-5A.
