On the strength of two second half interceptions, a goal line stand in the final minutes and an incredibly timed penalty, Ennis (11-1) hung on to edge Burleson Centennial (10-2), 17-13, at Lion Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

The Lions extended their record against the Spartans to 3-0 since they began playing in 2012, but most importantly lived to play again in the post-season. Next Friday they will meet District 7 champion Frisco (11-1) at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Mesquite.

Ending the season with four straight defeats did little to take away from one of the best Ennis volleyball seasons in years. The maroon-clad netters were 19-11 before falling to Midlothian (26-18) and Joshua (26-17). Third year HC Kelly Henderson added a season-ending road match at West (43-5). Ennis won the second game, 25-22, before the Trojans won the next two to extend their winning streak to 25 in a row. West won their first five playoff games to reach 30 straight before No. 2 Lexington (34-14) eliminated them, 3-1, in the regional finals.

A season of challenges came to an end when Ferris dropped the last two games in a play-in match with Alvarado, 3-2, to miss out on the playoffs.

HC Kyla Menefee’s squad got off to a 4-4 start and were 9-11 when the bottom fell out on the Lady Yellow Jackets. The good news is that both of their all-district volleyball picks return next year.

A pair of underclassmen were named to the All-District 17-5A team, Callie Raleston, a sophomore, and junior Bailey Lane.

A 7-3 start didn’t carry over into the league season as Palmer finished in a tie for fourth in the eight-team District 18-3A. A late three-match winning streak gave them a shot at third in the final week of the season, but the Lady Bulldogs came up short.

Malakoff and Mildred administered tough setbacks to cap a 16-19 season in which they were 8-7 in the district. Qualifying for the playoffs were the champions from Scurry-Rosser (32-7), who went 14-0 in sweeping the field. Eustace (28-11) was three games back at 11-3.

Looking ahead to the next round of the Class 5A playoffs, Ennis Athletic Director Don Drake released information concerning where the winner of Friday’s game between Ennis (10-1) and Centennial (10-1) will play next Friday, Nov. 29. The Lions-Spartans victor will take on the Frisco (10-1) vs. South Oak Cliff (9-2) winner. Should the Frisco Raccoons win, the game will be played at 1 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium. If the SOC Golden Bears win, the contest will begin at 2:30 p.m at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield.
