Ten months in, credit is due

Avoiding the coronavirus since mid-March of 2020, or ten straight months, has been an ever-present effort by most everyone in Ellis County. Some of the 184,826 residents have been more fearful than others of contracting the bug.

From the start the science community has warned adults over 60 they are more at risk than younger age groups. While Ennis had more people infected and more deaths related to Covid-19 in the first six-to-eight weeks compared to Waxahachie, Red Oak and Midlothian, the city has done remarkably well at limiting its spread and especially it’s death rate.

Eeyore's gloomy ruminations

It’s hard not to relate to the pessimism of Eeyore, the character in the Winniethe-Pooh books by A.A. Milne. He first appeared in 1926, so he’s been around for a long time. He’s gloomy, depressed and anhedonic – unable to experience pleasure when it would be a normal response. He’s an old grey stuffed donkey and he’s a friend of Pooh Bear.

Eeyore eats thistles but he has won the hearts of readers and fans of the cartoon series for his undying loyalty. He’s known for losing his tail, which is held on by a tack. His voice is quite sad, yet adorable.

Like a 2020 twelve-month calendar or last year’s Farmer’s Almanac, foretelling the events of the current year was fairly worthless. And the coming quarter may not be any easier.

It’s likely the accuracy of weathermen reigned supreme in this country compared to the last ten months, which still have an eerie apocalyptic feel to them.

A year in which an American political party surfed a rogue wave, “defund the police,” a bold, knee-jerk response that arose during the deaths of George Floyd and a few others, waited until after the national elections to recede the sinking thinking.

Confrontations with law enforcement officers were involved in each encounter to hook up with the idea to remove funding for police departments. The thought was that drastic times need drastic measures.

Ignorance is a lousy excuse, in fact, not knowing the way we should live is our responsibility. Saying we didn’t not know the speed limit or the laws of nature is not a free pass to do as we choose.

As we enter this season of being thankful it brings with it different points of view. And unlike the current culture without absolutes, there are many truths that mankind senses innately. Call them our conscious or common sense, man is not exempt from legal, relational or spiritual laws.
