Ennis centenarian remebered Lincoln

An elderly resident of Ennis, maybe one of the oldest ever, was interviewed by the Associated Press in 1955 about his longevity. The reporter found 109-year-old Frank Fowler an “alert old fellow” more interested in arranging Christmas lights in his living room than in his otherwise oft-repeated worry that he’s “fixin’ to die.”

Psalm 23: The good shepherd

This familiar psalm expresses the relationship of the believer to the Lord under two images. The first is that of the sheep and the shepherd.

The second image is the Lord in the temple is presented as the Protector, able to provide abundantly for his people and to preserve them from all danger.

The two images naturally lend themselves to allegorical interpretations.

Psalm 145: Praise of Yahweh

Psalm 145 is postexile; perhaps a 5th or 4th century B.C. The psalm praises God by a series of statements about his attributes, especially his gracious way of dealing with men. His tenderness embraces all of his children. Verses 11-13 “kingdom” is mentioned four times and this may be regarded as the central theme of the psalm. It can also be considered a psalm of confession of faith.

Seeking transformation and or spirituality is not a search for perfection; it is a search for divine union. How many do not consider a life journey is necessary because they are sure they have all the answers at the beginning? The “church says”, the “Bible says”, etc. Another group tries a different approach. They choose to whistle in the dark, look the other way, or just keep busy or as Jesus put it trying to “build bigger barns”. Intensity is frequently avoidance. The avoidance is often symbolized by what we call consumer culture. “Human approval means nothing to me,” Jesus said.

Luke lets us know that her name is not on the invited guest list. Her arrival is testament to a social hand grenade lobbed into Simon’s dining room. One can imagine that a dutiful servant is already dialing 911 and it will not be long we hear the siren approaching the home.

In addition to the more social impropriety of her presence, we are told that the woman was known to be a “sinner in the town.” The gospel language is reflecting a social and culture reality.
